An AI song reached number two. Australia responded by banning fully AI-generated music from the charts.

The Trigger
"A variation of Madonna's pop hit 'Like a Prayer' created by an Australian producer using AI-generated vocals and drums has spent 16 weeks in the Australian top 20... It peaked at number two on the Australian Record Industry Association's top 20 Australian singles chart in May." The producer behind it is Brisbane DJ Josh Fawaz -- the track stayed on the chart in fourth place as recently as this week.
The New Rule
Tracks can now only be eligible if "humans wrote the song and performed the lead vocal and the primary instruments." Fully AI-generated tracks are also ineligible for Australia's ARIA awards. AI used in a supporting role -- production, effects, mixing assistance -- doesn't disqualify a track; the line is drawn at who wrote the song and who's actually singing and playing it.
Why, in ARIA's Own Words
CEO Annabelle Herd said, "The ARIA Charts will always remain a transparent measurement of the music Australia consumes, but a chart that rewards unlicensed AI output would undercut the very basis of the recorded music we exist to represent."
It's Part of a Bigger Shift
The rule follows new principles published in July by the London-based International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, which now require charting tracks to be "substantially human made" -- meaning Australia isn't acting alone here; it's the most visible early adopter of an industry-wide standard other countries' charts are likely to follow.
Not Everyone Sees It as Black and White
Sydney Conservatorium composer Alexis Weaver called the move a "wonderful step forward" for valuing human creativity, describing the underlying debate as "exceptionally fraught and very emotional for a lot of musicians." She added: "It can be quite hard to avoid AI tools in the current landscape... There is a way to use it while you're still steering the ship and making the main creative choices."
The Takeaway
Worth sitting with: an AI-generated cover of a 37-year-old pop song nearly cracked the top of Australia's actual charts before anyone made a rule against it. The industry is now playing catch-up.
